UC Irvine 5, UC Riverside 0 Box Score
Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored 63 runs in six games last week, but they ran into a brick wall Friday evening in the form of UC Irvine pitcher Christian Bergman (7-3). The senior right hander limited the Highlanders to six hits over eight innings as the 25th ranked Anteaters put a damper on UC Riverside's postseason hopes with a 5-0 win. The loss drops the Highlanders to 28-20, 10-9 while UCI improves to 33-17, 13-6.
UC Riverside had four base runners in the first three innings against Bergman, but three of them reached with two outs and none advanced passed second base.
The Anteaters offense staked the Altadena, CA native to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Jonathan Hurst laced a triple down the right field line and a squeeze sac bunt from Ryan Fisher brought him home. That run aside, UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese (5-5) matched Bergman pitch for pitch through six innings facing the minimum number of Anteaters in the first, third, fourth and sixth frames.
Bergman kept the shutout in tact allowing just one hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth, but the Highlanders threatened to end that streak in the top of the seventh. Tony Nix singled up the middle to open the inning, and Eddie Young's double down the left field line put runners at second and third with nobody out. Bryan Horst then hit a dribbler to the pitcher on which Nix tried to advance, but Bergman's throw to the plate was in time.
With runners now on the corners, Trevor Hairgrove struck out, but Brian McConkey worked a walk to load the bases for Joey Gonzales. The senior right fielder has been on of the Highlanders hottest hitters of late with a .354 batting average over his previous 23 games., but Bergman got Gonzales to lift a fly ball to center which ended the rally.
The Anteaters got to Andriese again after the seventh inning stretch as he began the inning by plunking Jeff Cusick, and then gave up a one-out double to Fisher for a 2-0 lead. Francis Larson singled to right moving pinch runner Dillon Bell to third, and Matt Summers RBI single made it 3-0 UC Irvine.
Two more runs came plateward in the bottom of the eighth, as the Anteaters strung together two singles, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and a sac fly.
Eric Pettis came on to pitch the top of the ninth for UC Irvine, and struck out the side to end the game.
Michael Hur (pictured) and Robert Brantly each had two hits on the night for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders and Anteaters go at it again on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 pm PT.
