Cal State Northridge 10, UC Riverside 8 Box Score
Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team dug itself another early hole Tuesday afternoon, trailing at Cal State Northridge by a 10-4 score after five innings. Relief pitcher Mark Garcia gave the Highlanders three innings of one hit relief after that to keep them in the game, and the UCR offense scored one run in the top of the sixth, three in the top of the eighth, and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth. It wasn't enough, however, as the Matadors (29-24) held on for the 10-8 win.
The Highlanders (29-22) jumped on Northridge starter Jacob Peterson in the first inning as Tony Nix opened the game by depositing a 1-0 offering over the fence down the left field line for a 1-0 UCR lead. The next batter, Joey Gonzales, singled to center, and advanced to second after Michael Hur drew a walk. One out later, Justin Shults singled to right to make it 2-0 Highlanders.
Cal State Northridge tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, however, as UC Riverside starter Trevor Frank (3-3) gave up a two-run homer to left off the bat of Ryan Pineda.
It was a "staff day" on the mound for Northridge, and in the top of the second, the Highlanders loaded the bases off of relief pitcher Justen Gorski, but failed to score. The Matadors plated two more in the bottom half of the second to go up 4-2 as C.J. Belanger's triple down the right field line scored Drew Muren and Justin DeMarco.
The back and forth game continued in the third as Brantly walked on four straight pitches to start the top half of the inning against the Matadors third pitcher of the afternoon, Chris DeBoo. Shults followed with his 11th homer of the season to tie the game at four.
Frank was still on the hill for the Highlanders to start the bottom half of the frame, but he gave up an inning-opening single to Dominic D'Anna and a homer to Alex Muren to put the Matadors up two again. Cal State Northridge wasn't finished, however, as Ridge Carpenter drew a walk and promptly stole second. One out later, Dominic Piazza singled to left bringing Carpenter home, and TS Reed was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second.
UCR Head Coach Doug Smith made the call to the bullpen and brought in Derek Speigner, A single up the middle by Drew Muren loaded the bases and two batters later, Speigner plunked Pineda forcing in a run and giving Cal State Northridge an 8-4 lead.
After getting out of the jam in the third, Speigner retired the Matadors in order in the fourth, but he ran into trouble again in the bottom of the fifth. Piazza opened the inning with a walk, and Reed was ht by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After Drew Muren struck out looking, Belanger tripled down the right field line scoring Reed and Piazza for a 10-4 Northridge advantage.
The Highlanders got one back in the top of the sixth on a solo shot by Trevor Hairgrove off of Billy Ott, and cut the Matadors lead to two in the top of the eighth off of Jimmy Jolicoeur as Eddie Young's RBI single plated Trent Jemmett, and Nix crushed his second homer of the game and tenth of the season to make it 10-8 Cal State Northridge.
Meanwhile, Mark Gracia, who took the mound for the Highlanders with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, retired the first nine batters he faced to keep the Highlanders in the game.
In the top of the ninth, Shults laced a one-out single to right and Dan Pellegrino drew a walk to put runners on first and third, but two fly ball outs to center ended the game.
The Highlanders have four games remaining on their regular season schedule, all at home, beginning with a Wednesday afternoon tilt against No. 15 San Diego. First pitch is slated for 3 pm PT at the Riverside Sports Complex.
