Michael Hur's Four RBIs Help Highlanders To 12-8 Win Over UC Davis

UC Riverside 12, UC Davis 8 Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside left fielder Michael Hur drove in the first three runs of the game Friday evening as the Highlanders jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but UCR still needed his eighth-inning single to bring home the game-winning run as the Highlanders (31-22, 12-10) topped UC Davis 12-8.
UC Riverside scored in each of the first four innings against the Aggies (25-28, 8-14) and appeared to be on their way to an easy win. Hur drilled a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and picked up an RBI single in the second to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead. Bryan Horst drove in a run in the third with a single up the middle, and in the fourth Joey Gonzales scored on a wild pitch and Justin Shults added to his record-setting RBI total with a single to right.
All six of those runs came off of UC Davis starter Dayne Quist. Meanwhile, UC Riverside's Matt Andriese appeared on his way to his sixth win of the season allowing just four hits through the first five innings. He ran into trouble in the top of the sixth, however, as a double and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out for Eric Johnson. The Aggies first baseman cleared the bases with a double down the left field line slicing the Highlanders lead in half.
Andriese faced just three batters in the top of the seventh thanks to a double play grounder, and in the bottom half of the frame, UC Riverside added what looked like an insurance run as Trevor Hairgrove's infield single scored Horst to make it 7-3 Highlanders.
Things fell apart in the top of the eighth, however, as the Aggies touched Andriese for two singles and a double. Derek Speigner came on in relief with runners on first and third and one out. The junior couldn't find the plate, missing on eight of his nine pitches. Mitch Patito answered the call next and walked the first batter he faced to cut the UCR lead to one, 7-6. One out later, David Popkins sent a single to left field, and the Highlanders were down 8-7.
Thankfully the lead didn't last long as UC Riverside returned the favor by scoring five runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Gonzales's single scored McConkey to tie the game, and Hur's double scored Gonzales with the go-ahead run. A bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Eddie Young gave the Highlanders a two-run lead, and a wild pitch scored Shults with UCR's 11th run of the night. Trevor Hairgrove ended the scoring with an RBI single that plated Tony Nix.
Patito came back out in the top of the ninth and retired the Aggies in order. The freshman picked up the win throwing one-and-two-thirds scoreless innings of relief for his third victory of the season against no defeats. Popkins (3-2) was saddled with the loss.
The Highlanders and Aggies go at it again on Saturday evening at the Riverside Sports Complex with first pitch slated for 6 pm PT.
