Cal State Fullerton Completes Sweep Of Highlanders With 6-0 Win

Fullerton, CA—The tenth-ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans completed a three-game sweep of the Highlanders Sunday afternoon as Dylan Floro threw a complete-game six-hit shutout to earn the victory. The loss drops UC Riverside to 23-18, 7-8 and into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings. The Titans improve to 30-14, 15-3.
For the third time in as many games, Cal State Fullerton put two on the board in the first inning, this time off of UCR starter Matt Larkins. Christian Colon singled up the middle to start the frame, and after a sac bunt moved him to second, Carlos Lopez cleared the bases with a homer to right center.
Larkins kept the Titans in check in the second, third and fourth innings, but started to run into trouble again in the fifth. With two outs, Larkins plunked Gary Brown and Lopez brought Brown home with a double to center to make it 3-0 Cal State Fullerton.
The Titans added another run in the bottom of the sixth as Nick Ramirez doubled to center with nobody out and Corey Jones brought him home with a single to right. In the seventh, Richie Pedroza reached on an infield single, and Brown homered to left for a six-run Titans lead. That home run ended Larkins day as he gave way to Eddie Orozco and Mitch Patito.
The UC Riverside offense struggled all afternoon as the Highlanders managed just six singles and only advanced three runners as far as second base.
The Highlanders have five and a half home games this week beginning with a Tuesday, May 11 meeting with UNLV at 6 pm. On Wednesday, May 12 Loyola Marymount returns to the Riverside Sports Complex to complete two games that were interrupted by rain earlier this year. First order of business is to complete the April 21 game which the Lions lead 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm PT. The second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first. Big West Conference action picks up again this weekend as Cal State Northridge makes its way to UC Riverside for a three-game series.
