Fresno, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team (0-1) dropped its season opener 3-0 at Fresno State (1-0) on Friday evening by the scores of 26-24, 25-22, and 25-19.
Senior Kelly Simpson led the Highlanders with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs while Bianca Endersby added nine kills and hit for a .412 clip. Savannah Thomas also added 10 digs for UCR.
In the first set, the Highlanders led early on at 7-4, but the Bulldogs went on a seven to two run to take an 11-9 lead. UCR would tie the set at 12 apiece and force three more tie scores before opening up a 19-15 advantage, punctuated by a Chelsee Arnitz kill.
Fresno State scored the next three to close the gap as they eventually tied it at 21 and went on to take a 23-21 lead.
UC Riverside responded with three points on two Bulldog errors and one Thomas kill to lead at set-point 24-23 before Fresno State turned the tables and scored three points to win the set 26-24.
The Highlanders fell behind early 10-5 to start the second set, but the team rallied to tie things at 12 midway through the set. After three more tie scores, the Bulldogs took a 17-16 lead and never looked back as they went on to a 25-22 win.
Looking to avoid the sweep by Fresno State in the third set, UC Riverside turned an 11-11 tie into a 15-11 advantage on two Simpson kills, one Thomas service ace, and an error by Fresno.
However, the tables turned once again as four consecutive kills by the Bulldogs evened the score at 15 apiece. The Highlanders led 17-16, but Fresno outscored them nine to three to close out the match with a 25-19 win.
Fresno's Marissa Brand had a game-high 11 kills while Kelly Mason tallied 17 digs.
The Highlanders continue play at the Fresno State Classic on Saturday with a 10:00 am game against No. 20 ranked Oregon and a 5:00 pm contest against Santa Clara.
