UC Riverside 1, Loyola Marymount 1 - Box Score
Riverside—With seven minutes to go in the second period, Loyola Marymount goalkeeper Jack McCormack got his foot on an Aaron Long header in the middle of a scrum, but Arnie Sanchez grabbed the rebound and pushed it past the Lions defense to help the Highlanders to a 1-1 tie Sunday evening. UC Riverside is now 3-4-1 on the year while LMU is 4-3-1.
The tie snapped a five-match winless streak for the Highlanders against the Lions who had won the previous five meetings by a combined 16-2 score.
Loyola Marymount got on the board in the 37th minute of play when Kyle Johanson redirected a Rafael Baca shot towards Phil Da Silva who slotted the ball past the Highlanders Nick Goldreich for the first goal of the match. The Lions had four shots on goal in the first period to UC Riverside's one, but that ratio changed in the second as UCR outshot LMU 17-8 including 4 to 2 on goal. One of those shots on goal was Sanchez's second goal of the season.
The game was physical as the team's combined for 37 fouls, the most in a UCR match this season. In all, seven yellow cards were distributed, and LMU's Jonas Reiter picked up back-to-back yellow cards within 2:07 of each other in the first overtime period. That sent Reiter to the sidelines, and the Lions were forced to play a man down for the final 13:31 of the match.
Despite the man advantage and a 4-2 edge in shots in the bonus periods, the Highlanders were unable to pick up the game-winner.
Big West Conference play gets underway for UC Riverside this week as the Highlanders travel to UC Irvine on Wednesday, September 29 for a 7 pm PT tiile with the Anteaters.
