UCR Men's Tennis Picks Up First Win Of 2011 With 5-2 Victory Over Vanguard

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2011 season with a 5-2 victory against Vanguard in the team's home opener at the SRC Tennis Courts on Saturday morning.
The Highlanders began the day with a sweep of the doubles point. Michael Conroy and Quoc Doan defeated Pereira/Wagner 8-6 at No. 1 while Kevin Griffin and Felix Macherez won their match 8-4 against Bucher/Iwdal at No. 2, and Austin Andres and Raineir Matias defeated Rosniak/Gillon 8-3 at No. 3.
"It was a solid day," Head Coach York Strother stated. "We played consistent doubles all the way through."
In singles action, UCR won matches from the second through fifth spots, garnering the required points for the win.
At No. 2 singles, Doan defeated Robin Wagner 6-2, 6-2, while Andres won his match at No. 3 7-5, 6-0. Ryan Stanbury defeated Radek Rosniak 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4, and Mike Conroy won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
The Highlanders continue their homestand on Saturday, Feb. 5 against Missouri-Kansas City at 12:00 pm at the SRC Tennis Courts.
