Women's Hoops Withstands Late Titan Rally In 73-61 Victory

Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team withstood a second half Fullerton rally to snap a five-game losing skid and even out its record with a 73-61 victory at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon in Big West action.
The Highlanders (7-7, 1-1) led 37-19 at the half, but CSF (5-11, 1-3) cut the lead to five on two occasions late in the game before UCR held on for the win.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham scored 10 of her 14 points within the last minute and a half of play, including all six free throws to seal the win.
Rhaya Neabors led the Highlanders with 20 points, one shy of her career-high, while Rheya Neabors added 11.
The Highlanders opened the second half struggling hitting just four of their first 15 shots while CSF made 6-of-9. The tides continued to change as Fullerton chipped away at UCR's lead and closed to within five, 55-50, with 5:38 remaining in the game.
UCR scored six of the next seven points to put its lead back at 10, 61-51, with three minutes to go. The Titans rallied back and scored six straight to again cut the lead to five, 61-56, with 1:46 left, until the Highlanders outscored the Titans 12-5 to conclude the game.
In the first half, Cal State Fullerton scored five straight points to take a 5-4 lead three minutes into the game, but a Rheya Neabors three-pointer started a 15-0 run that gave the Highlanders an 19-5 lead with 11:25 on the clock.
Fullerton got it back to single digits just two minutes later, but the Highlanders concluded the first half on a 9-0 run capped off by Brittany Waddell's three-pointer with one second remaining.
UC Riverside enjoyed hot shooting from the field (60.7 percent) in the period while limiting the Titans to just 32.0 percent. For the game, UCR shot 47.7 percent while Fullerton hit 46.0 percent.
The Highlanders also scored 46 points in the paint compared to 18 for CSF, and scored 32 points off turnovers.
The Highlanders return to the Student Recreation Center for a two-game homestand beginning on Thursday, January 13 against Cal State Northridge at 7 pm PST in Riverside, CA.
