Women's Basketball Moves Above .500 With 64-53 Win Over CSUN

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team moved above .500 improving its record to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in league play after a 64-53 victory over Cal State Northridge in Big West Conference action on Thursday evening at the Student Recreation Center.
The Highlanders took the lead from the opening tip and never trailed, opening up a 27 point lead in the first half and a 30 point lead in the second half. The Matadors (1-15, 1-3) made a run to make a game of it late in the second half, but UCR held on for the win.
Brittany Waddell led UC Riverside with 18 points on 6-12 shooting including 4-9 from three point range, while Alyssa Morris added 14 points. CSUN's Jasmin Erving led all players with 24 points.
The Highlanders began the game scoring the first seven points and took a double digit lead just 3:16 into the contest. UCR hit 8 of 12 shots and 4 of 6 from beyond the arc as they pushed their advantage to 22, 28-6, with 8:26 left.
The Matadors made a 6-0 run to get within 16, 28-12, a minute and a half later, but that was as close as CSUN would get in the period as the Highlanders opened up a 27 point lead with 42 seconds remaining.
The Highlanders 46 points scored in the first half is the most in a half this season, and the most since the team scored 47 in the second half at UC Irvine on February 18, 2010.
UCR led 55-25 with 16:49 left in the game, but Cal State Northridge limited the Highlanders to just nine points the rest of the way as the Matadors outscored UCR 30-18 in the second half.
After shooting 45.7 percent from the field in the first period, UC Riverside shot just 30.4 percent in the second half, including 2 of 9 three pointers. The Matadors hit 34.0 percent of their shots for the game.
The Highlanders continue Big West Conference by hosting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, January 15 at 5:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
