10/19/2011 8:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—Cal State Northridge broke a scoreless tie in the 86th minute of play Wednesday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium, but it was the Highlanders who scored two goals over the final 2:52 to take the 2-1 victory. (Box Score)
The Matadors' (6-7-1, 3-2-0) Thomas Ramos scored with 4:13 to go in the match on a header from 5 yards out as Christian Gonzales provided the cross from the right corner.
But UCR (7-5-2, 2-3-1) bounced back just over a minute later to tie the score when Hayden Leslie collected a Matadors header just outside the 18 and picked up his second goal of the season.
The team’s appeared headed for overtime, but the Highlanders lined up for one last free kick with time running out. It was Azeez Atanda corralling the ball from 30 yards out sending it towards the box to Ulises Mosquedo. Mosquedo's header found Ivan Garcia on the left side, and with just nine seconds left, Garcia beat Michael Abalos for the game-winner.
The win gives the Highlanders seven victories on the season which ties the program record originally set by the 2003 squad and later tied by the 2004 version.
Next up for the Highlanders is an October 22 re-match with UC Santa Barbara. The last time those two teams met, UC Riverside upset the then seventh-ranked Gauchos 3-1 at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Kick off Saturday at UCSB is slated for 7 pm.
