Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team outshot the University of Louisiana-Lafayette 42.6 percent to 37.1 percent Wednesday evening, but missed two free throws and two three pointers late in the game as the Ragin' Cajuns escaped with a 59-56 victory.
With ULL (1-3) leading by two points 57-55 late in the game, UCR's Tre'Shonti Nottingham hit 1-for-2 from the free throw line to cut it to one. Jessica Ogunnorin then missed the front end of a bonus free throw, and could not convert on a three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining. Louisiana was then fouled and sank two from line to go up 59-56 as Nottingham's three-pointer with four seconds to go fell short.
Neither team led by more than five points in the second half, as there were nine lead changes and 11 ties scores throughout the game.
The Highlanders (1-4) entered the half leading 30-28, but fell behind as the Ragin' Cajuns scored nine of the next 11 points to go up 37-32 with 14:17 remaining. UCR would retake the lead three more times, the last at 49-46 after a Briauna Linton fastbreak layup with 7:38 to go.
The game was tied on two more occasions before ULL took the final lead of the game, 57-55, before holding on to the 59-56 victory.
Natasha Hadley scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the first half as UCR scored nine straight and mounted a 17-8 advantage with 10:19 to go. Louisiana turned the tables and rallied off eight consecutive to close to one, 17-16, just two mintues later.
The lead changed hands the rest of the half until a Leah Washington jumper with 14 seconds remaining, and a long ball by Nottingahm with one second to go, gave the Highlanders a 30-28 margin going into half.
UC Riverside hits the road for a five game swing starting on Friday, November 25 at Utah State at 6:00 pm PST in Logan, UT.
