Reno, NV—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Teams heads back out on the road this weekend with its first winning streak of the season in tow following a 75-73 road win over Montana State and a 91-60 home victory over UC Santa Cruz.
Phil Martin posted back-to-back 25-point scoring performances in the wins, and has increased his scoring average on the season to 16.6. He also paces the Highlanders in rebounding averaging 6.1 boards per game.
Robert Smith became eligible to suit up for UCR two games ago after sitting out the first seven games of the season due to NCAA transfer rules. He is averaging 11.0 points per game which includes a 14-point performance at Montana State that saw the junior guard scored nine of the final 12 UCR points including the game-winning three-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining.
As a team, the Highlanders recorded two of their best offensive performances of the year over the past two games averaging 83.0 points during that span. UC Riverside connected on 56.9 percent of its field goal attempts vs. the Banana Slugs which is the program’s best single-game shooting percentage since the Highlanders made 58.7 percent of their shots at SMU on Nov. 20, 2010.
Nevada enters the weekend winners of four straight and seven of its last eight games. Among those wins are victories over Arizona State (69-61), Washington (76-73 OT), Bradley (64-59) and Pacific (78-54).
Deonte Burton leads three members of the Wolfpack scoring in double figures averaging 15.7 points per game. He is followed by Malik Story (14.0) and Olek Czyz (10.0). Dario Hunt is the team’s leading rebounder and is averaging a near double-double at 8.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
This is just the third meeting between the teams and first since the Wolfpack picked up an 86-71 win over UCR on January 4, 1969.
