Highlanders Fall In Big West Opener 70-59 At Long Beach State

Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team rallied back from an 11-point first-half deficit to tie the game midway through the second period, but it was not enough as Long Beach State won both teams' Big West Conference opener 70-59 on Thursday evening.
The Highlanders drop to 0-1 in league play and 2-10 overall, while The Beach improve to 1-0 and 6-8.
UCR took a 5-0 lead in the early going thanks to a jumper from Jessica Ogunnorin and a three-point play from Natasha Hadley. The Highlanders limited the 49ers to just 1-of-8 from the field during the first four minutes of play, but the lid was lifted from the basket as Long Beach State hit four of its next five field goals.
LBSU tied the game at seven and had ties on three more occasions through 13-13 when the 49ers went on a 6-0 run to go up by six, 19-13, with 10:05 remaining in the half. UCR Head Coach John Margaritis called timeout to regroup, and it paid off as the Highlanders scored the next seven points on two Hadley buckets sandwiched around a Tre'Shonti Nottingham three-pointer to retake the lead, 20-19, at the 8:26 mark.
The teams traded baskets with The Beach leading 26-25 after a Dynese Adams three-pointer at the 5:57 mark. From that point, however, the 49ers went on another run, scoring six straight and 13 of the next 16 points as they went into the locker room up 39-28.
UC Riverside opened the second period with an 8-2 run cutting the LBSU advantage to five, 41-36, after 4:22 in the half. The 49ers went back up by eight, but the Highlanders scored eight straight to tie the game at 46-46 capped off by a Leah Washington jumper at the11:54 mark.
Long Beach State countered with a 6-0 run of their own as Hallie Meneses hit two consecutive three-pointers to put the 49ers up 52-46 with just over 10 minutes left in the game. UCR would cut the lead to one, 53-52, after a Nottingham free throw and three-pointer with 7:11 remaining.
However, the 49ers pushed their lead back to 12, 64-52, with a little over two minutes to go, as the Highlanders were held without a bucket during that six-minute span.
UC Riverside got to within eight points, 64-56, with 1:21 left, but Long Beach scored six of the final nine points for the 70-59 victory.
Nottingham led all players with 19 points, while Hadley added 15 for the Highlanders. Tipesa Moore had 17 to lead The Beach, while three other players scored in double-figures.
For the game, the 49ers outshot UCR 45.3 percent (24-of-53) to 39.3 percent (22-of-56), including a 43.8 percent (4-of-13) to 30.8 percent (7-of-16) advantage from beyond the arc.
UC Riverside concludes the 2011 calendar year with a 4:00 pm tip at Cal State Northridge on New Year's Eve, Saturday, December 31, in Northridge, CA.
