Poor Shooting Plagues UCR Women's Basketball In 59-37 Loss At UCSB

Santa Barbara, CA - On January 15 on this year, the UC Riverside women's basketball handed UC Santa Barbara a 33-point loss, but the Gauchos returned the favor this Saturday afternoon by defeating the Highlanders 59-37 at the Thunderdome in Big West action.
The Highlanders drop to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in league play, while UCSB improves to 14-10, 8-4.
UC Riverside shot a season-low 23.1 percent from the field, the lowest since a 24.6 percent night against Eastern Washington on December 17, 2002. The 37 points scored is the lowest all year and the lowest since they scored 40 on January 4, 2009 at UC Santa Barbara.
After opening the game with a 6-2 lead, the Highlanders went cold as the Gauchos scored 13 straight to take a 15-6 lead with 11:23 left in the game. UC Riverside closed to five at one point, but UC Santa Barbara ended the period up 30-17, outshooting UCR 41.7 percent to 20.7.
The Highlanders closed to nine early in the second half, but never got close as UC Santa Barbara cruised to a 22-point win.
Four Gauchos scored in double figures led by Mekia Valentine's 13 points and 18 rebounds. Tre'Shonti Nottingham was the only Highlanders player to reach double digits, leading UCR with 12 points.
UC Santa Barbara nearly doubled the Highlanders on the boards, grabbing 50 compared to just 28 for UCR.
The Highlanders return to action at Long Beach State on Thursday, February 17 for a 7 pm tip in Long Beach, CA.
