Loyola Marymount 4, UC Riverside 1 - Box Score
Los Angeles, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team got a seven-inning, one-run pitching performance out of starter Matt Andriese, but the bullpen couldn't hold the Lions in check as a three-run eighth sent the Highlanders to a 4-1 loss in their season opener Friday afternoon at Loyola Marymount.
Head Coach Doug Smith lifted Andriese with the score tied at one apiece, as the junior right-hander scattered eight hits through seven innings walking none and striking out three.
Kevin Dickey got the call from the pen, but struggled from the outset plunking Jonathan johnson to open the inning. After a Matt Koch sac bunt moved Johnson to second, Evan Simonitsch singled to left, and Alex Guthrie doubled to right center to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Shon Roe singled to right field to score Simonitsch, and that ended Dickey's stint on the mound. Mike Wolford came on with one out in the inning retiring Nick Devian on a fly ball to center, and watching as his catcher, Dan Pellegrino, nailed Roe trying to steal second for the third out of the inning.
In the top of the ninth, all the Highlanders could muster was a two-out walk off of Lions closer Ryan Hawthorne, before he closed the door on the 4-1 win.
UC Riverside picked up the first run of the day in the second inning as Justin Shults led off the top half with a walk and Pellegrino brought him plateward with a double to left. David Andriese followed with a single to right for the team's third hit of the day, but the Highlanders could only scratch out three more hits the rest of the way.
LMU tied the score in the bottom of the third thanks to an error on UCR first baseman Vince Gonzalez. Andriese retired the first two batters of the inning and appeared to have the third out in hand when Johnson popped a ball up off the first base line in foul territory. Gonzalez muffed the catch and Johnson took advantage of the extended at bat by singling to right field. He promptly stole second, and Koch's single up the middle tied the game at one.
Pellegrino finished the day with three of the Highlanders six hits and the team's lone RBI. The rest of the team combined to go just 3 for 30.
UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount are scheduled to play a double header beginning at noon on Saturday, February 19 at the Riverside Sports Complex. Should rain cancel the games, the teams will return to the RSC on Sunday to play a twin bill and finish the four-game series on Monday with a single game at LMU.
