USC 6, UC Riverside 3 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team recorded a season-high 12 hits off of nine USC pitchers Tuesday evening against, but they couldn't string enough of them together to avoid losing to USC 6-3 at the Riverside Sports Complex.
The Highlanders also drew three walks on the night, but left 10 men on base including two in the second, three in the third and two in the eighth.
UC Riverside drew first blood after starter Dustin Emmons (0-1) faced the minimum three hitters in the top of the first as Eddie Young led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. After Trevor Hairgrove flied out, Ryan Goetz singled to center advancing Young to third, and Young scampered home on an errant throw back to the infield by USC center fielder Omar Cotto Lozada. Tony Nix popped up to center field and Goetz was thrown out trying to steal second to end the threat.
That lead was short-lived, however, as the Trojans hung a three spot on the board in the top of the second on two hits, a walk and a wild pitch.
Dan Pellegrino and David Andriese each picked up one-out singles in the bottom of the second, but they were stranded after Bart Stepanovich's bunt attempt was popped into the air into the glove of USC catcher Kevin Roundtree, and Phil Holinsworth flied out to center.
Mark Garcia started the third for UC Riverside replacing Emmons who threw 52 pitches in two innings allowing three runs on two hits and three walks. The Trojans promptly greeted the left-hander with two singles and a walk to start the inning, tacking on what would prove to be the deciding run of the game.
UC Riverside left the bases loaded in their half of the third as Hairgrove and Goetz laced one-out singles into the outfield and Justin Shults drew a two-out walk. Pellegino drilled a sharp grounder to third and Adam Landecker beat Goetz to the bag by an eyelash to prevent any runs from scoring.
David Andriese halved the Trojans lead the following frame leading off the bottom of the fourth with a homer to right field. The Highlanders looked to close the USC advantage even further as Stepanovich singled to right, but he was gunned down trying to stretch his hit into a double.
USC scored single runs in the sixth and eighth to push their lead to four at 6-2, but UC Riverside put together one last rally in their half of the eighth. Shults drew a walk to start the inning, and Andriese punched a one-out single through the right side. Hollinsworth singled through the right side as well one out later scoring Shults, but Young struck out looking and the inning was over.
Kevin Dickey came on in the ninth and faced the minimum three batters, but the Highlanders went in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
Garcia went six innings for UCR allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. Emmons was saddled with the loss while Trojans relief pitcher Kyle Richter was credited with the win.
The Highlanders hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Sacramento State beginning Friday at 6 pm PT.
