Highlanders Can't Complete Comeback, Fall To LBSU 74-63 In Semifinals

#1 Long Beach State 74, #7 UC Riverside 63 - Box Score
Anaheim, CA—UC Riverside's thoughts of pulling off another upset in the Big West Conference Tournament took an early hit Friday evening at Honda Center as Long Beach State scored the first 15 points of the game and although the Highlanders cut the lead to six late in the game, they weren't quite able to get over the hump, falling to the top seed 49ers 74-63.
The Highlanders missed their first seven shots of the evening while The Beach went four of 10 from the field and six of eight from the free throw line. The free throws were particularly important because they were scored on the back of three Kareem Nitoto fouls which limited the junior guard to just six minutes in the first.
Javon Borum ended the run with a three-pointer with 15:05 to go in the first and Phil Martin's three on the team's next possession cut the Long Beach State advantage to nine at 15-6. After another 49ers miss, Martin followed an errant Daymond Cowlah shot with a thunderous dunk, slapping the backboard in the process. He landed awkwardly and was helped off the court by members of the UCR training staff.
To add insult to injury, Martin was assessed a technical for his post dunk celebration, and Casper Ware made one of two free throws to make it 16-8 Long Beach.
Martin returned with 11:06 remaining in the first with the score Long Beach State 24, UC Riverside 10, and the 49ers maintained most of that spread for the remainder of the half taking a 40-28 lead into the locker room.
The Highlanders scored the first basket of the second half on a BJ Shearry tip in, but the Beach countered with a 10-2 run to open up its largest lead of the game at 50-32 with 15:51 to go. Four minutes later a Larry Anderson layup made it a 20-point game, 56-36. UC Riverside cut the lead to 14 at 56-42, and to eight at 59-51.
A three-pointer by Greg Plater ended the run, and a pair of Anderson free throws pushed the lead back out to 13, 64-51 with 3:52 to go.
UC Riverside had one run left in them though as Kevin Bradshaw converted one of two free throws and Nitoto hit a lay up. Phil Martin's lay up made it 64-56 49ers, and his jumper with 2:21 on the clock pulled UCR to within six.
Casper Ware drained a three on the Beach's very next possession, however, to stop the Highlanders' momentum and effectively end the game.
Anderson led all scorers with 21 points while Plater and Ware added 17 and 16 respectively. Martin and Borum paced the Highlanders with 14 and 13 each. The key stat of the game was located in the free throw column where the 49ers hit 25 of 36 while UC Riverside converted on 6 of 12.
