Box Score - UC Riverside 9, Saint Louis 2
Box Score - Harvard 7, UC Riverside 4
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split a pair of games on Friday to open the UCR Tournament. The Highlanders (5-15) defeated Saint Louis 9-2 in the opener, but dropped a 7-4 decision to Harvard in the nightcap.
In the first game, both Saint Louis (13-7) and UC Riverside scored single runs in the first inning. The Billikins took advantage of an error by UCR's left fielder for their first run, while Kayla White scored on an illegal pitch in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.
In the fourth inning, both teams again plated one run each as Kerri Dockins' RBI double made it 2-1 SLU, but Alexis Pickett's sac fly scored Taylor Thomas from third for the game's second tie, 2-2.
The Highlanders opened up the game in the fifth inning by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. White opened the frame with a walk—one of three on the day for the sophomore—and advanced to second on Ariel Shore's single.
Kameryn Hebenton's base hit then scored White for the go-ahead run. Singles by Brittany Keeney and Pickett sandwiched around Thomas' triple pushed four more runners across as the Highlanders took a 7-2 lead.
Pickett then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jessica Vasser's RBI single brought her home to give UCR an 8-2 lead.
Dionne Anderson reached on a fielder's choice and later stole second. As she was stealing third, Saint Louis' catcher was long on her throw down to third base, allowing Anderson to score on the error for the final run of the inning.
The Billikens threatened in the sixth with runners at second and third and no outs, but a double play and pop fly ended the inning. Jordyn McDonald retired Saint Louis' batters in order in the seventh, closing out the win.
McDonald picked up her third win on the season, giving up just one earned run in seven innings. Julian Austin got the loss for Saint Louis.
Against Harvard in game two, the Crimson (4-2) quickly got things going touching UCR pitcher Casey Suda for three runs in the first inning. Suda settled down after that and pitched three scoreless innings, but Harvard scored two additional runs in both the fifth and sixth frames.
UC Riverside got two runs back in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 7-2.
Hebenton drew a no-out walk and was brought home by Brittany Keeney's double to right center field. Thomas drew another another walk and an illegal pitch gave UCR runners at second and third. Nicole Carter fouled out to first base, but Keeney tagged and came across for the second run of the inning.
The Highlanders continued their late rally by scoring two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and runners at second and third, Thomas' base hit to left field scored both runners to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
UCR's rally came to an end, however, as a ground ended concluded the game.
Suda was issued the loss for the Highlanders, while Harvard pitcher Rachel Brown earned the win.
The UCR Tournament continues on Saturday with three games beginning at 9:00 am at Amy S. Harrison Field.
