Saint Mary's 2, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Riverside—Baseball fans at the Riverside Sports Complex were treated to two stellar pitching performances Friday evening, but Saint Mary's starter Mark Anderson was just a bit better than UCR hurler Matt Andriese allowing just three hits in seven innings in the Gaels' 2-0 win.
Saint Mary's (4-9) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Justin Fazio laced a one-out single to left, advanced to second on a Brenden Kalfus ground out, and came home on Patrick Wisdom's single up the middle.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders (8-7) were having difficulty solving Anderson (3-1). The right hander allowed just two baserunners and no hits through the first three innings of play.
Tony Nix broke up the no-no in the bottom of the fourth driving a single to right field with one out. Justin Shults beat out a chopper to first to put runners at first and second, and David Andriese's fielder's choice put runners at second and third with two outs. But Dan Pellegrino struck out to end the inning, and the score remained 1-0 Saint Mary's.
The Gaels tacked on another run in the top of the sixth as Donald Collins led off the frame with an infield single to short, stole second, and came plateward on a Fazio single down the left field line. A wild pitch, a walk and a single loaded the bases with one out, but Andriese struck out Tony Channing and induced a grounder to second off the bat of Chris Murphy to avoid any further damage.
In the top of the seventh, Andriese struck out a pair of Gales for his ninth and tenth strikeouts of the night. The junior Kd 10 batters in his previous outing at Pepperdine, becoming the first member of the Highlanders during the Division I era to post double digit strikeout performances in back-to-back starts.
Dorsey Ek took over on the mound for the Gaels in the top of the eighth and retired the side in order. In the ninth, it was Thomas Cortese who took to the hill for Saint Mary's, and Shults greeted him with a single through the right side of the infield. Unfortunately, the Gaels turned David Andriese's grounder up the middle into a double play, and pinch hittter Kyle Boudreaux struck out to end the game.
Matt Andriese finished the game with 11 strikeouts in eight innings, giving way to Mike Wolford in the ninth. Wolford struck out the side giving the Highlanders 14 strikeouts on the evening which is the most since 16 Texas Tech Red Raiders went back to the dugout on March 3, 2009..
These same two clubs square off in a double header tomorrow beginning at 2 pm PT at the Riverside Sports Complex.
