Box Score - Idaho State 12, UC Riverside 9
Tucson, AZ - The UC Riverside softball team pounded out 16 hits but could not win a slugfest with Idaho State, falling 12-9 in the second game of the Wildcat Invitational on Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, the bats exploded for both teams over the next three frames.
The Highlanders (3-12) got things going in the second as Kayla White's single with the bases loaded and two outs scored one run, and a throwing error by the Bengals (3-6) allowed another run to score.
A solo home run by Jessica Baca quickly halved the score in the bottom of the second, and ISU put up two more runs to take a 3-2 lead.
That advantage was shortlived as UCR plated three in the top of the next frame as Taylor Thomas started a two-out rally. Two singles gave way for Jessica Vasser's single, which scored Thomas, and Alexis Pickett then stole third and came home on a throwing error by Idaho State's catcher.
Alexis Villamor singled in the next at bat, and a muffed throw by ISU's catcher allowed Vasser to score, giving the Highlanders a 5-3 lead.
The lead was shortlived yet again as the Bengals scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to go up 7-5. The advantage flip-flopped for a fourth time as UCR scored three runs in the top of the fourth to lead 8-7.
White and Ariel Shore singled to open the inning. Kameryn Hebenton reached an error by ISU's pitcher, advancing Shore to third and allowing White to cross home plate. A sac fly by Alexis Pickett scored Shore from third, and Vasser's RBI single's brought home Hebenton.
For a fifth time, the lead changed hands and unfortunately for the Highlanders, it was for the last time as Idaho State rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 12-8.
With one out and bases loaded, Amy Lwin came in to pitch for Casey Suda, who got the starting nod in the circle for UC Riverside.
An illegal pitch by Lwin scored one run, and Christina Rayner hit a grand slam two batters later lifting the Bengals to a five-run inning.
After a scorelss fifth which saw ISU strand two runners, the Highlanders got one run back in the sixth as Hebenton scored on an error by the shortstop.
In the seventh, Shore's two-out single gave UCR some life, and a single by Hebenton put the tying run at the plate, but Brittany Keeney grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
Suda ended up with the loss for the Highlanders, while Kandis Clesson earned the win for ISU.
The Wildcat Invitational continues on Saturday with an 8:00 am game against Utah State.
