3/5/2011 7:06:19 PM | Softball
Box Score - Portland State 8, UC Riverside 6
Tucson, AZ - The UC Riverside softball team scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback as they fell 8-6 to Portland State in game four of the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday evening.
Kayla White scored the first run of the game for the Highlanders (4-12) as she came home on an illegal pitch in the bottom of the first inning. UCR's 1-0 lead held up through the fourth, until the Vikings scored three to go up 3-1.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, UCR's Dionne Anderson's 2-RBI single brought home the tying runs as the game evened at three each.
After a scoreless fifth, Portland State (10-7) exploded for five runs on six hits and one Highlanders error in the top of the sixth. The Vikings batted around the order as they went up 8-3.
UC Riverside chipped away at the lead in the next two innings. Alexis Pickett scored an a wild pitch in the sixth inning, and Taylor Thomas' double scored two more runs in the seventh. It was too little too late, however, as a ground out and a pop up ended the Highlanders run.
Jordyn McDonald got the loss for UC Riverside, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on 11 hits.
The Wildcat Invitational concludes on Sunday with a noon game against #4 ranked Arizona.
