Gophers Complete Comeback Defeating UCR Softball 7-5 In Eight Innings
3/4/2011 1:24:16 PM | Softball
Box Score - Minnesota 7, UC Riverside 5
Tucson, AZ - The UC Riverside softball team led 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but Minnesota scored three runs to tie the game and outscored the Highlanders 3-1 in the eighth inning to complete the come-from-behind 7-5 win in game one of the Wildcat Invitational.
The HIghlanders (3-11) got on board in the third inning as a fielder's choice scored one run, and Alexis Pickett's 2-RBI single up the middle made it a 3-0 ball game.
The Gophers (9-7) got one run back in the sixth inning, but Kameryn Hebenton's single scored Kayla White from second to give UCR a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Highlanders need just three outs to walk away with the victory, but Minnesota had other ideas as they scored three runs to tie the game.
UCR threatened in the bottom of regulation with runners at second and third with one out, but a strike out and a ground out sent the game into extra innings.
Due to the tournament tie-breaker rule, a runner is placed on second base to start an extra inning. The Gophers were able to score this runner to take a 5-4 lead, and added two insurance runs before the inning was over.
In the bottom of the frame, Kayla White's double to right field scored Dionne Anderson, who was placed on second base for the Highlanders cutting the lead to 7-5.
With a runner in scoring position and no outs, it looked as if UCR would be able to complete its comeback, but two straight strikeouts and a ground out standed the runner and gave the Gophers their 7-5 win.
Amy Lwin, who entered the game in relief to pitch the eighth inning, was saddled with the loss for UCR as she gave up the winning runs. Jordyn McDonald got the start and pitched the seven innings prior, allowing nine hits and four earned runs.
Minnesota's Sara Moulton earned the win pitching 5.0 innings while striking out six.
The Wildcat Invitational continues with a noon game against Idaho State on Friday.
