Men's Basketball Clinches 7th Seed. Will Face Cal Poly Thursday At 6 pm

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team (11-18, 6-10) will take on Cal Poly (15-14, 10-6) Thursday at 6 pm in the first round of the ampm Big West Conference Basketball Tournament following the team's 75-66 win over UC Irvine (13-18, 6-10) Saturday evening.
The Highlanders still had a shot at the sixth seed had UC Davis (10-20, 4-12) beaten Cal State Fullerton (11-19, 7-9) Saturday, but the Titans upended the Aggies, 87-82, to secure that spot for themseevles.
Delonte Taylor's jumper with 13:23 to go in the first ignited an 8-0 UCR run and gave the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish. Elliott Berry drained a jumper with 8:09 to go to give UC Riverside its first double-digit lead, 28-17, and they took a 43-31 lead into the locker room.
Phil Martin paced the Highlanders with 11 points in the first while UC Irvine's Eric Wise led all scorers with 12. UC Riverside connected on 52.9 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes of action compared to just 36.7 percent for the Anteaters.
The Highlanders still led by 13 with 11:27 to go, when UC Irvine began to climb back into the game. Chris McNealy hit a three, and after Eric Wise made one of two free throws, McNealy converted on a lay up attempt to make it 59-52.
Darren Moore's jumper made it a five-point game, but the Highlanders went on a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 12, 66-54.
The Anteaters put together one last run cutting the UCR advantage to five, 71-66, with 28 seconds to go, but Kareem Nitoto and Phil Martin each drained a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Martin led all scorers with 21 points while B.J. Shearry just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, He also added four blocked shots giving him 10 over the past two games. Wise led the Anteaters with 20 on the night.
