Long Beach State 1, UC Riverside 0 (12 innings) - Box Score
Long Beach, CA—Fans at Blair Field were treated to two pitching gems Friday evening as UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and Dirtbags starter Andrew Gagnon allowed just one hit in eight innings of work, But it was LBSU's Matt Duffy who drove in the game winner with one out in the 12th, after both starters had left the game, to hand the Beach a 1-0 win.
The victory improved Long Beach State to 17-15 and 4-3 in the Big West while the Highlanders fell to 15-13 and 3-4 in conference.
It was Duffy who drew a one out walk off of Andriese in the bottom of the second for the Dirtbags lone base runner of the first six innings. It wasn't until a Ino Patron single up the middle in the seventh that LBSU had it's first hit of the ball game.
Meanwhile, Trevor Hairgrove opened the game with a double down the left field line off of Gagnon which would turn out to be the lone hit of the day allowed by the Brentwood, CA native,
Gagnon was lifted after the eighth inning having struck out 10 Highlanders, and giving up just one hit while walking four. Eddie Magallon took over and worked a perfect ninth before plunking Dan Pellegrino to start the tenth. A.J. Beckley pinch ran for Pellegrino, and two outs later Eddie Young singled to right moving Beckley to third, but Hairgrove fouled out to first to end the inning. Young's single was just the second base knock of the evening for the Highlanders.
Andriese took the mound for the Highlanders again in the bottom of the tenth marking the first time in the team's Division-I era that a UC Riverside pitcher has thrown more than nine innings. In the tenth, he allowed just a two-out walk to Kirk Singer who was erased trying to steal second to end the frame. The only UCR pitcher to throw more innings in one stint than Andriese is David Glaum who threw 14 vs. Oregon State on March 25, 1976.
Dylan Stuart finally took over for Andriese in the bottom of the 11th worked a three-up, three-down inning. The 12th was a different story, however, as Patron singled to left with nobody out, and was sacrificed to second by Mike Marjama. Duffy singled to center, and Patron scored before UCR catcher Bart Stepanovich could collect Tony Nix's throw and apply the tag.
The Highlanders and Dirtbags tangle again on Saturday evening beginning at 5:30 pm PT.
