Box Score - Pacific 8, UC Riverside 5
Box Score - Pacific 7, UC Riverside 3
Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside softball team lost a doubleheader slugfest to the Pacific Tigers on Friday afternoon, falling 8-5 and 7-3 in Big West action at Bill Simoni Field.
UCR (10-26, 3-8) took the early lead in game one, staking a 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth. Ariel Shore led off the frame with a single, and came around to score on Kayla White's RBI single through the left side.
The lead was shortlived, however, as Pacific (29-15, 8-3) brought four runs across in its respective half inning. A single, walk, and fielder's choice coupled with an error made it a bases loaded situation for the Tigers. A sac fly brought home the tying run, and two straight singles made it a 4-1 game.
The lead flipped hands again in the fifth inning, this time with the Highlanders going up 5-4 after scoring four runs. With one out, singles by Alexis Pickett, Dionne Anderson and Shore loaded the bases for Brooke Hebenton.
Hebenton proceeded to hit a routine sac fly that scored Pickett, but the Tigers overthrew the ball and Anderson came home on the error to cut the lead to 5-3. Kameryn Hebenton then put UCR on top with a 3-RBI home run to left field--her third of the year.
However, the tides turned in favor of Pacific as they again took the lead, this time for good, after scoring the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning and adding insurance runs in the sixth.
UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald took the loss for the Highlanders, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings of work. Nikki Armagost earned the win for the Tigers, pitching a complete game.
The Highlanders entered game two of the doubleheader looking to go home with the split, and the team again took the lead first, this time 2-0 off of two solo home runs by White and Brittany Keeney in the third inning.
Similar to the first game, though, Pacific retook the lead in its respective bottom inning, scoring four runs to go up 4-2. UCR cut the lead to 4-3 as Jessica Vasser belted a solo shot to right center in the top of the next inning.
However, the Tigers scored single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to seal the 7-3 victory.
Amy Lwin was saddled with loss for UCR, allowing 12 hits and seven earned runs.
The three home runs hit by the Highlanders in game two tie the third-most home runs in a single game in the Division I history of the program.
Game three of the three-game series between Pacific and UC Riverside begins at 12:00 pm on Saturday.
