Cal Poly 4, UC Riverside 3 - Box Score (Coming Soon)
San Luis Obispo—Phil Holinsworth scored on a Trevor Hairgrove safety squeeze in the top of the tenth to put UC Riverside up 3-2, but the Highlanders (11-11, 1-2) couldn't hold the lead as pinch hitter Jordan Hadlock ripped a bases-loaded, two out double to left center in the bottom of the inning to give Cal Poly (10-13, 2-1) the 4-3 win.
Trevor Frank got the start for UCR scattering eight hits and striking out six in eight innings of work. The Highlanders staked him to an early lead putting together a two-out rally in the top of the first as Justin Shults drew a walk, and Tony Nix doubled to center to make it 1-0 UC Riverside.
The lead didn't last long, however, as Bobby Crocker opened the bottom of the inning with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home one batter later on Mike Miller's sac fly to left.
The score remained tied at one until the top of the fifth when Eddie Young began the frame with a double to left, advanced to third on a balk and scored on Bart Stepanovich's single through the right side.
Justin Shults doubled to start the top of the sixth chasing Mustangs starter Chase Johnson in favor of Eugene Wright. Wright struck out Nix and David Andriese, and Vince Gonzalez flied out to center to keep the score 2-1 UC Riverside.
Cal Poly picked up the equalizer in the bottom of the sixth when J.J. Thompson and Chris Hoo ripped back-to-back, one-out doubles to left field. Both teams put runners on in the seventh inning but failed to score. The Mustangs had men at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but UCR closer Mitch Patito, who took over fro Frank to start the inning, was able to work his way out of the jam.
Holinsworth drew a one-out walk to start the top of the tenth moving to third on a Ryan Goetz single to left center. Hairgrove then laid down a perfect safety squeeze towards first to score Holinsworth, and the Highlanders were once again up by a run.
Patito (1-3) started off his second inning of work by issuing a four-pitch walk to D.J. Gentile. He then hit Mitch Haniger with a pitch to put the potential winning run at first. A sac bunt by Thompson moved both runners up 90 feet, and a walk to Hoo loaded the bases.
The Highlanders picked up the second out of the inning when Evan Busby hit a grounder to first which Gonzalez corralled and fired home to force Gentile. Hadlock got the call to pinch hit and laced a double to left center to score Haniger and pinch runner Jono Grayson with the tying and winning runs.
Jeff Johnson (2-0) who pitched the final three-and-two-thirds innings for the Mustangs picked up the win.
UC Riverside returns home this week for a Tuesday, April 6 tilt with the UCLA Bruins. First pitch at the Riverside Sports Complex is slated for 6 pm PT.
