UCR Softball Splits Doubleheader With UC Davis 9-8 And 17-5

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team continued Big West Conference play on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with UC Davis, winning 9-8 in game one but falling and 17-5 in game two at Amy S. Harrison Field.
UC Davis (20-23, 5-9) took the early 1-0 lead in the first game as Janna Wagoner reached an an illegal pitch from UCR (11-28, 4-10) starter Jordyn McDonald in the first.
McDonald then got out of a bases-loaded jam to end the inning, and the Highlanders put three runs on the board in their respective frame to go up 3-1.
With one out, Ariel Shore got hit by a pitch, Kameryn Hebenton singled to centerfield, and Brittany Keeney singled, loading the bases.
Jessica Vasser brought in the tying run with her RBI gournd out that scored Shore, and Brooke Hebenton doubled to right center clearing the bases for UCR as Keeney and Hebenton came around to touch home plate.
The lead changed hands in the next inning as the Aggies scored three runs to go up 4-3. With the bases loaded, Elizabeth Santana's sac fly scored one run, and a wild pitch scored the tying run. With runners at first and third, Jessica Gonzalez singled to left field, giving UCD the 4-3 lead.
Coco Villamor led off the bottom of the second for UC Riverside with a double, and advanced to third on Alexis Pickett's sac bunt. Kayla White drew a walk and stole second, but Villamor got thrown out at home on Shore's fielder's choice in the next at-bat.
After Shore stole second, Kameryn Hebenton's single to the shortstop allowed White to score from third, tying the game at 4-4.
Both pitchers settled down a bit after that, as both teams sent just three batters to the plate in each of the next two innings.
In the fifth, Shore led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Kameryn Hebenton. Keeney laced a single to left field, and after stealing second, Vasser's single to left scored Shore to put UCR up 5-4.
Brooke Hebenton then doubled, scoring Keeney, but ran into a double play as the Highlanders ended the inning with a 6-4 lead.
The lead flip flopped for the fifth time as UC Davis scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-4 advantage. Allison Smith led off with a walk, and came around to score after an error by the UCR second baseman.
With two runners on base, Santana sent a shot over the left field fence, lifting the Aggies to an 8-4 lead.
The Highlanders scored the tying runs in the bottom of the sixth on Alexis Pickett's two-RBI home run.
In the seventh, Kameryn Hebenton drew a walk to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on Keeney's sac bunt. Vasser came through with the winning RBI for the Highlanders, hitting a double up the middle as Hebenton touched home plate for the 9-8 win.
McDonald earned the win for UCR, while Alex Holmes was saddled with the loss for UC Davis.
In the second game, the Aggies came out of the gate strong, touching UCR starter Casey Suda for seven runs in the second inning as they send 13 batters to the plate.
The Highlanders would make it a three-run ballgame after four innings. UCR got the first run back in the bottom of the second, as Vasser scored on a wild pitch after initially doubling to left field. One inning later, Pickett singled to lead off the frame, and came home on Keeney's RBI ground out.
UCD score a single run in the top of the fourth, but UCR responded with three in its respective bottom half inning. Brooke Hebenton and Coco Villamor hit back-to-back doubles, and Taylor Thomas and Pickett each drew walks, making it an 8-3 game.
Kayla White brought home another run with her single, and a wild pitch cut the lead to 8-5. UCR had more opportunities to cut the lead even further, but two runners got thrown out at the plate as they left two stranded to conclude the inning.
The Aggies blew the game open two innings later, as they scored three in the fifth and sixth in the sixth inning to take a commanding 17-5 advantage. The 17 runs allowed are the most since the Highlanders allowed #10 Washington to score 22 back in February.
Casey Suda pitched just two innings but took the loss for the Highlanders, as UCR never retook the lead after falling behind 7-0. Amy Lwin came on in relief in the third and pitched four innings for UCR.
UCD's Jessica Thweat earned the win for the Aggies
The Highlanders conclude the three-game series against the Aggies on Sunday, May 1 with first pitch slated for 12:00 pm at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
