Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team took an early 1-0 lead but fell behind 3-1 and could not complete the comeback falling by a final score of 3-2 to UC Davis on Sunday afternoon in Big West Conference action.
Both teams split Saturday's doubleheader, so the Aggies (21-23, 6-9) took the conference series with their 3-2 win.
Kameryn Hebenton put the Highlanders (11-29, 4-11) on board in the first inning as she belted a two-out shot over the centerfield fence for her fourth home run of the season.
After two scoreless innings from both teams, the Aggies plated three in the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage. JJ Wagoner led off with a triple and came home on Megan Guzman's double. Elizabeth Santana scored Guzman with a double of her own, and Jessica Gonzalez scored Santana with her single.
UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald got out of a jam in the top of the fourth inning to keep the Highlanders within two runs.
With two outs in UC Riverside's respective fourth, Jessica Vasser singled and was brought home by a Brooke Hebenton triple to cut the Aggie lead to just one, 3-2.
In the UCR sixth, consecutive singles by Ariel Shore and Kameryn Hebenton put runners at first and second with no outs. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, they left both runners stranded as three straight outs ended the inning.
UC Davis threatened in the top of the seventh, as with two outs a single and double by Kelly Harman and Bianca Castillo respectively put runners at second and third. However, McDonald got Desiree Chavez to strike out, ending the inning.
UC Riverside was down to its last three at-bats in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get anything going as they were retired in order to end the game.
McDonald took the loss the Highlanders, while UC Davis' Alex Holmes earned the win.
Offensively, Kameryn Hebenton led UC Riverside with two hits, while five others added one hit apiece.
The Highlanders now travel to Cal State Northridge for their final road series of the regular season beginning on Saturday, May 7 at 12:00 pm in Northridge, CA.
