Box Score - CSU Bakersfield 7, UC Riverside 1
Bakersfield, CA - The UC Riverside softball team lost a doubleheader at CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, 8-3 and 7-1, at the RR Softball Complex. The Highlanders (8-20) have now lost the last three straight and five of the previous six.
CSUB (12-18) got on board quickly in the first game touching UCR starter Casey Suda for five runs through two innings.
Back to back singles by Jamie Miller and Karissa Veiga opened the first inning, and after each advanced a base due to a wild pitch, Jazmine Lee homered down the left field line to give the Runners a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Sammy Rodriguez hit a solo blast to make it 4-0, and Miller came around to score on Lee's single for a 5-0 advantage.
The Highlanders threatened in the third inning as with one out, Dionne Anderson and Kayla White each drew walks. Both advanced a base on Ariel Shore's ground out to second base, but Kameryn Hebenton struck out swinging to end the inning.
UC Riverside finally got on board in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to close the lead to 5-3. With one out, Taylor Thomas doubled down the left field line, Jessica Vasser then walked, and Brooke Hebenton singled to left field to load the bases.
After another out, CSU Bakersfield pitcher Sammy Rodriguez walked Anderson for the first run in the Highlanders two-out rally. White singled up the middle to score Vasser, and Shore singled through the right side to score Brooke Hebenton to make it 5-3.
The Roadrunners weren't done scoring, however, as Lee hit another home run in the bottom of the fourth, this time a 2-RBI shot to right center to lift CSUB to a 7-3 lead.
In the fifth, the Runners went up 8-3 as Emily Bliss came around to score on Rodriguez's single.
The score would hold as the final as the Highlanders stranded two runners in the top of the seventh inning to end the game.
Suda took the loss for UCR, allowing 10 hits and eight runs, six of them earned. Rodriguez pitched a complete game earning the win for the Runners.
In the second game of the doubleheader, CSU Bakersfield scored first, plating seven across in the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Lee singled to the shortstop, scoring two.
Another single loaded the bases for a second time, and UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald walked Sarah Hoag scoring another run.
McDonald got Ryane Petersen to strike out, but Tera Macias then belted a shot down the left field line for a grand slam, making the score 7-0.
The Highlanders got one run back in the top of the next inning, as Keeney led off the frame with a triple and came home on Vasser's double.
However, that was the last run either team would score as the Roadrunners won by a final score of 7-1.
McDonald allowed nine hits and seven runs in the loss, although all runs were unearned due to the five fielding errors. Hoag earned the win for CSU Bakersfield, tossing all seven innings and allowing just a single run.
For the day, Vasser, Keeney and Shore led UCR with three hits apiece.
UC Riverside returns to Big West Conference play this weekend by hosting a three-game series against Cal State Fullerton beginning Saturday, April 9.
