Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team had early leads in both games of the Big West Conference doubleheader with Long Beach State on Friday, but could not prevail as the 49ers won 8-4 and 11-2 (6 innings) at Amy S. Harrison Field.
In game one, UC Riverside (12-33, 5-15) starter Jordyn McDonald quickly retired the Long Beach State batters in order to open the game, and the Highlanders offense came alive scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.
Singles by Kayla White and Ariel Shore put runners at first and second with no outs, and Kameryn Hebenton drew a walk to load the bases. 49er's pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley walked Brittany Keeney to bring in the first run, and Jessica Vasser's sac fly to left field scored the second.
Long Beach (37-15, 15-5) scored three runs in the top of the second inning as two consecutive walks with the bases loaded tied the game, and a sac fly drove in the game-winning run to give the 49ers a 3-2 advantage.
LBSU went up 4-2 with a single run in the fourth, but UCR got that back in the fifth inning on Jessica Vasser's solo home run.
The 49ers scored four runs and the Highlanders made two errors in the six inning as the Beach took an 8-3 lead. UC Riverside again got one run back in their respective frame thanks to a solo home run by Alexis Pickett, but left a runner stranded in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
McDonald suffered the loss for the Highlanders, allowing six earned runs and eight hits in seven innings of work. Jones-Wesley earned the win for LBSU, allowing 10 hits but just four runs.
Game two opened in identical fashion as UC Riverside went up 2-0 after the first inning. With Kameryn Hebenton at second and White at first, Vasser came through with a single to right field scoring both runners.
A half inning later, however, Long Beach reclaimed the lead with three runs, and followed that up with six runs in the third to go up 9-2.
The Highlanders managed just three hits the rest of the game as the 49ers scored two more runs in the sixth to end the game by the eight-run mercy rule, 11-2.
Casey Suda took the loss for UCR, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Taylor Petty earned the win for LBSU, allowing just two runs and three hits in four innings.
The Highlanders conclude the season on Saturday with the series finale against the 49ers beginning at 12:00 pm in Riverside.
