Berkeley, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team opened up the 2011 season with a 3-0 loss to No. 3 ranked California in the first game of the Cal Molten Classic on Friday evening at Haas Pavilion.
The Bears (1-0) showed their national ranking early on, taking the first set by a score of 25-11. The Highlanders (0-1) got closer in the next two sets, but fell 25-17 in each respectively.
Amanda Vialpando led UC Riverside offensively with 12 kills and a game-high 13 digs, while Jessica Moncayo added 11 digs.
The Highlanders continue play at the Cal Molten Classic with matches against Florida International and Fairfield at 1 pm and 5 pm respectively on Saturday.
