Martin's 31 Points Not Enough As Long Beach State Tops UCR 77-70 In OT
1/26/2012 7:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Long Beach State 77, UC Riverside 70 (OT)
Riverside—Phil Martin scored a game-high 31 points and BJ Shearry tied a UC Riverside record by blocking seven shots, but it wasn't enough as Long Beach State outscored the Highlanders 14-7 in overtime en route to a 77-70 victory.
The 1,298 in attendance at the Student Recreation Center Thursday evening saw 10 ties and 15 lead changes in a see-saw battle as UCR (10-10, 4-3) tried to hang the first conference loss of the season on the 49ers. With 8:18 to go in the game, the Highlanders had their biggest lead of the game at 53-45 thanks to an 8-1 run capped by back-to-back jumpers in the lane by Robert Smith.
Long Beach (15-6, 8-0) countered with an 8-0 run of its own, tying the score at 53 as the Highlanders went more than three minutes without scoring. A Shearry dunk broke a 58-58 tie with 1:51 remaining, but the Beach followed with an old-fashioned three-point play by TJ Robinson on their next possession to take a 61-60 lead.
Kareem Nitoto put UCR back on top 62-61 on a jumper with 44 seconds to go, while Larry Anderson's tip in with 32 seconds on the clock made it a 63-62 ballgame. The Highlanders had the ball for the last possession of regulation, and David Chavarria was fouled with two seconds remaining with a chance to win the ballgame. But his second free throw missed the mark, and the teams headed into overtime.
During regulation, Long Beach State never led by more than one point. All that changed with a minute and 12 seconds gone in overtime as Casper Ware drained a three-pointer. Martin countered with a three of his own to tie the score, but James Ennis put the 49ers up by three again with 3:09 remaining.
Chavarria connected on a pair of free throws on UC Riverside's next possession, but the Highlanders would commit three turnovers and miss one shot over their next four trips down the court, while the 49ers closed the game with six straight Ware free throws to secure the victory.
UC Riverside contained Ware for most of the game holding him to just two points in the first period, and five in the second, but he scored 11 of LBSU's 14 points during the bonus period on his way to a team-high 18.
Martin scored nearly that many in the first half as he went five of nine from the floor for 13 points. He added 13 more in the second and five in overtime as he scored 30 or more points for the second time this season.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday evening trip to UC Irvine. Tip is slated for 5 pm PT, and the game is being televised on PrimeTicket.
