Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team dropped a 25-22, 25-14, and 25-20 decision to UC Irvine Saturday evening in Big West Conference play at the SRC Arena.
Ashley Cox had 11 kills to lead the Highlanders (5-15, 0-7), while Aly Squires led the Anteaters (9-12, 4-4) with 14 kills. UCI hit .220 as a team compared to just .082 for UCR.
The Highlanders had the early 3-1 lead in set one, and still led at 6-5, but the Anteaters went on a 4-0 run to go up 9-6. UCR went on to tie the set at 10 following two Annishia McKoy kills and a UCI error, but UC Irvine again rallied for four straight, going up 14-10.
UC Riverside was behind between two and four points the rest of the set, but scored two straight with the Anteaters at set-point, 24-20, to close to 24-22. The Highlanders could not fully complete the comeback, however, falling 25-22.
UCR again had an early 2-1 lead in set two, but could not stop a 6-0 run as UC Irvine went up 7-2. The Anteaters pushed their advantage to 10-3, but the Highlanders got within four, 11-7, following a Cox kill.
UCI again rallied and scored five straight to go back up 16-7 before opening a 20-10 lead en route to a 25-14 victory.
It was the Anteaters with the initial lead in set three, 4-1, but the Highlanders rallied to close to 6-5. UCI's margin stayed between three and four points until UC Riverside again cut it to one, 18-17, following kills from McKoy and Megan Reza.
After trading points, the Highlanders used a Reza and Tyler Dorsey block to tie the set at 19, and it was tied again at 20 after a Cox kill. Unfortunately for UCR, the Anteaters scored the next five straight, winning the set and the match 25-20.
UC Riverside now hits the road traveling to Cal Poly on Friday, October 19 for a 7 pm PT in San Luis Obispo, CA.
