Anchorage, AK—UC Riverside and Texas State square off against one another Saturday in the final game of the 2012 CARRS/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout for both teams.
The Highlanders are coming off of a tough one-point loss to the host Seawolves on Friday afternoon, while the Bobcats dropped a 78-63 decision to Loyola Marymount. Chris Patton paced UCR with 16 points in their loss, and Vonn Jones led Texas State with 14.
Patton is now second on the Highlanders in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game while leading UC Riverisde in rebounding at 7.2 per contest. Freshman Josh Fox still paces the squad in scoring with an 11.5 clip.
Joel Wright leads the Bobcats offensive attack averaging 17.2 points per game while Matt Staff chips in with 14.8. Texas State is averaging 74.8 points per game this season. None of the Bobcats averages more than 28 minutes per game on the year, but seven players average between 18.8 and 28.0.
Although this is the first-ever meeting between the clubs, they do have a strong connection: UC Riverside Head Coach Jim Wooldridge was the head coach at what was then Southwest Texas State from 1991-94. The Bobcats improved ever year under Wooldridge and went 25-7 in his final season advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. In addition, current Highlanders Assistant Coach Mike Miller was an assistant under Wooldridge at Southwest Texas State, and took over the head coaching duties for six seasons after Wooldridge’s departure.
