Riverside—With Tre'Shonti Nottingham leading the entire nation in scoring it didn't take a rocket surgeon to draw up the Washington State game plan Wednesday evening—stop Tre'Shonti Nottingham.
And the plan nearly worked as the senior guard was held to nine shots and 14 points on the night, 13 below her seasonal average. But the Highlanders (4-2) got double-digit scoring performances out of Natasha Hadley (17), Brittany Crain (16), and Janelle Kearney (12) to beat the Cougars, 71-65.
The game featured nine ties and 11 lead changes with neither team leading by more than seven points the entire night. It was a four-point Highlanders advantage with just under nine minutes gone in the second half when Washington State used an 11-2 run to go up 57-52 with 9:02 remaining.
That's when the UCR defense took over. For the next four minutes and 52 seconds, the Highlanders forced four Washington State turnovers and six missed shots. Meanwhile, Crain scored eight points and Kiara Harewood chipped in with a three-pointer to give UC Riverside a lead it would never relinquish.
The Cougars (2-4) cut the UCR lead to three on two occasions down the stretch, but each time Hadley countered with a layup to keep it a two-possession game. Nottingham drained four free throws over the final 34 seconds to seal the deal.
The win was the first for the Highlanders over a Pac-12 team since they topped Oregon, 74-69, on the road on December 14, 2010. It also avenged a 39-point loss to the Cougars on December 11 of last year which was the third largest margin of defeat in the program's Division I history.
In addition to leading the Highlanders in scoring, Hadley chipped in with 13 rebounds—two off of her career high set on November 15 of this year vs. Utah State.
Defensively, UC Riverside held the Cougars to 37.0 percent shooting from the field including four of 21 from three-point range. Tia Presley led Washington State with 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting. The rest of the Cougars made just 17 of 58 shots from the floor.
The Highlanders remain at home this week as they take on Northern Arizona on Sunday, December 2 at 2 pm PT.
