Box Score - Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Riverside 1
Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (6-20, 0-12) kept it close Saturday evening at Cal State Fullerton (13-12, 7-5), but could not pull off the win falling in four sets to the Titans, 26-24, 25-19, 21-25, and 25-22.
Amanda Vialpando led all players with 16 kills while Ashley Cox added 11. Bre Moreland led CSF with 15 kills.
The Highlanders rallied back from a 5-1 deficit early in set one to take a 7-6 lead. Tyler Dorsey had three service aces during that run while the Titans committed two errors.
The teams traded points until UCR went up by four, 19-15, after consecutive kills from Dorsey. Cal State Fullerton made a run, scoring eight of the next 10 points to go up 23-21. UCR would tie the set at 23, and again at 24, before a Kayla Neto kill and a Highlanders error gave CSF the 26-24 victory.
The beginning of the second set belonged to the Titans as they went up 8-1. CSF pushed its lead out to nine points on five occasions, the last at 19-10, but UC Riverside countered to close to the gap to 20-18. The run was shortlived, however, as Cal State Fullerton scored five of the last six points for the 25-19 win.
The Highlanders finally got the win in the third set, surviving a late scare by the Titans to make it 2-1 in the match.
UCR had a 20-15 lead late in the frame, but CSF cut it to one, 20-19. A Vialpando kill and service ace, combined with two Fullerton errors, gave UC Riverside a 24-19 cushion, as the Highlanders held on for the 25-21 victory.
It was the Titans with the 12-4 lead early in the fourth set, but UC Riverside scored four straight and nine of the next 10 points to tie the set at 13-13.
Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way until Cal State Fullerton found itself at set-point, 24-22, and used a Leah Best kill to earn the 25-22 win.
UC Riverside now continues its Big West Conference slate with a 7 pm match at UC Irvine on Thursday, November 8 in Irvine, CA.
