Riverside—According to the Mayan calendar, the world is ending this Friday, but on the off chance that we all survive, the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team is moving ahead with plans to host Air Force on Saturday, December 22 at 1 pm PT.
The Highlanders (3-8) are coming off of a 91-62 win over Whittier College on Tuesday that saw five members of the team score in double digits. Freshman Davin Guinn posted his first career double-double in the win with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Steven Jones scored a career-high 14 points off of the bench.
UCR has won three straight at home which is the longest such streak since the Highlanders won six straight at the SRC Arena from February 17, 2010 to January 4, 2011.
Air Force is 7-2 overall, but just 2-2 after opening the season with wins in each of the team's first five games. The Falcons enter the weekend averaging 78.7 points per game while making 49.8 percent of their field goal attempts and 39.1 percent of their shots from beyond the arc. They also force opponents into committing 16.4 turnovers per game compared to 10.6 for Air Force.
Michael Lyons leads the Falcons averaging 20.3 points per game. He is also the team's leading rebounder at 5.2 per contest. Taylor Broekhuis (11.3) and Todd Fletcher (10.7) also average in double digits for Air Force. Broekhuis is connecting on 60 percent of his shots from the field, while Fletcher hits 58.2 percent of his shots including 53.1 percent from long distance, all while posting an eight-to-one (40-5) assist-to-turnover ratio.
This is the first meeting between the Highlanders and Falcons.
