Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Early Deficit In 78-64 Loss To Idaho
12/7/2012 8:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Box Score—Idaho 78, UC Riverside 64
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team was plagued by poor shooting early in the first half, and a double-digit deficit was just too great to rally back from as Idaho came away with the 78-64 win Friday evening at the SRC Arena.
The Vandals (3-6) benefited from hot shooting, hitting nine three-pointers including four by Stacey Barr, who tied for the game-high with 20 points. Idaho connected on 47.5 percent from the field, with UCR (5-3) hitting 41.4 percent, and only 28.0 percent from downtown.
The Vandals also owned the boards, grabbing 37 compared to 31 for the Highlanders, while dominating in the paint, 28-16.
It was Idaho taking control in the early period, opening a 17-6 lead thanks to 67.0 percent shooting (6-9) from the field. The Highlanders had a lid on the basket during that span, connecting on just 2-of-11.
Kiara Harewood nailed a three-pointer from downtown, and a Nottingham three-point play at the 11:05 mark brought the score to two possessions, 20-14, but the Vandals responded with an 11-0 run as the lead grew to 31-14 with just under eight minutes in the period.
Idaho's margin extended as high as 19, 35-16 at the 6:08 mark, but UC Riverside used a 17-8 run to close out the half, cutting the lead to 10, 43-33. The Highlanders continued their run to open the second period, scoring six straight as the gap was closed to just four, 43-39, less than two minutes in.
After trading buckets, Idaho's lead again grew to double-figures, and it flirted around the 10-point margin for the next seven minutes. UCR got as close as eight, 61-53, with 8:03 remaining, but a 13-5 run by the Vandals made it a 74-58 ballgame with a little over three minutes left.
Tre'Shonti Nottingham had 20 points to lead the Highlanders while Brittany Crain added 16—14 of them in the second half—while Harewood added a career-high 14 points.
UC Riverside now breaks for 10 days to tackle school finals before hitting the road at Lousiana on Monday, December 17 at 5 pm PT in Lafayette, LA.
