Men's Tennis Picks Up First Victory Of Season, 4-3 Over Vanguard

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis team picked up its first victory of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating Vanguard 4-3 at the SRC Tennis Courts.
The Highlanders started the day claiming two of the three doubles matches to win the first point.
Austin Andres and Felix Macherez defeated Pereira and Piccin 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Luis Gastao and Simon Peters emerged victorious in a 9-7 battle at No. 3. UC Riverside almost swept the doubles point but Kevin Griffin and Jimmy Roberts fell 9-8 at No. 2.
In singles action, both teams won three matches apiece, but that was all the Highlanders needed to secure the win.
Macherez and Gastao remained undefeated on the day as they both won their singles matches.
Macherez won 7-5 in the first set, and after dropping a 7-6 battle in the second set, rallied to win 6-1 at the top spot over Lucas Pereira.
Gastao won in straight sets at No. 4, 7-6, 6-4 against Robin Wagner, and Jimmy Roberts came up clutch winning a tight 7-5, 7-6 decision at No. 2.
The Highlanders now host a doubleheader on Saturday, February 11 against College of the Desert at 9:00 am and Riverside City College at 2:30 pm.
