UC Riverside 7, San Diego State 1 - Box Score
Riverside—Five UC Riverside pitchers combined to five-hit San Diego State Tuesday evening as the Highlanders upended the Aztecs 7-1 at the Riverside Sports Complex to even their record at 2-2 on the season.
Mitch Patito (1-0) made his first career start as a collegian allowing just one hit in five innings of work. His teammates staked him to a 2-0 lead in the first as Devyn Bolasky singled up the middle to open the bottom of the inning and promptly stole second. After Eddie Young drew a walk, Clayton Prestridge lined out to left field, but Kyle Boudreau was able to advance both baserunners with a ground out to first. Vince Gonzalez then drove a single to left that scored Bolasky and Young, putting the Highlanders on top.
UC Riverside picked up another run in the bottom of the second inning when Alex Rubanowitz, Bart Steponovich and Bolasky hit back-to-back-to-back singles chasing Aztecs starter Adam Anawalt with one out in the frame.
The Highlanders effectively put the game out of reach on the bottom of the fourth as they plated four runs off of San Diego State's third pitcher of the evening, Cameron Pongs. Young drove in Robanowitz with a sacrifice fly to plate UCR's fourth run, and Gonzalez singled to center three batters later to make it 6-0 Highlanders. Cody Hough's single to short brought Boudreau homeward and ended the scoring for the night for UC Riverside.
Mitch Patito worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to qualify for the win giving way to Antonio Gonzales. Gonzales threw a scoreless sixth inning and Gavin Mills followed with a scoreless seventh.
The Aztecs ended the shutout bid in the top of the eighth when Gary Allen opened the inning with a double off of Ben Doucette. Back-to-back groundouts brought Allen in to score, but Joie Dunyon kept San Diego State off the board in the ninth, and the Highlanders had their second win of the season in hand.
Bolasky went four for four on the night, while Gonzalez drove in four runs. No member of the Aztecs had more than one hit in the game.
This weekend, UC Riverside travels to No. 13 Arizona State. All three games will be broadcast on gohighlanders.com as the Voice of the Highlanders, Ghizal Hasan, brings the call from Packard Stadium. First pitch Friday is slated for 5:30 pm PT.
