LBSU Tops UCR Men's Basketball 64-40 To Remain Unbeaten In Big West Play
2/25/2012 3:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Long Beach, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team had hopes of handing Long Beach State its first conference loss of the season Saturday afternoon, but the 49ers scored 19 of the first 24 points of the game and never looked back en route to a 64-40 victory. The loss drops the Highlanders to 6-9 in conference, one game back of Cal Poly for fourth place in the Big West. Long Beach State improves to 14-0
It was a game the Highlanders would like to quickly forget as the 49ers built a 41-18 led at the half by shooting 48.5 percent from the floor, outrebounding UC Riverside 22 to 13, forcing 13 UCR miscues and holding the Highlanders to 32.0 percent shooting. Casper Ware (13 points) and Larry Anderson (11) combined to outscore UC Riverside 24-18 in the period.
UC Riverside picked up its defensive effort in the second half, holding the 49ers to 37.0 percent from the floor, but the damage was already done. Long Beach pushed its lead to 27 with less than a minute gone in the second period, and never led by fewer than 21 the rest of the way.
Ware finished with a game-high 17 points, and he was joined by teammates Eugene Phelps (11), Anderson (11) and T.J. Robinson (10) in double digits. Phil Martin led the Highlanders with nine, adding 10 rebounds coming up just shy of his fourth double-double of the season.
The Highlanders have one regular season game remaining on their schedule as UC Riverside returns home for Homecoming 2012 as well as Senior Nite on Saturday, March 4. Tip is slated for 5 pm PT.
