UC Riverside Softball Hangs On For 3-2 Victory Over Quinnipiac
3/10/2012 2:53:00 PM | Softball
Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Quinnipiac 2
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team weathered a late storm by Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon, and held on for the 3-2 victory in the second game of the Amy S. Harrison Classic.
The Highlanders were without a hit until the third inning, when they put together two-run, two-out rally.
With the first two batters retired, Kayla White drew a walk, and Dionne Anderson followed with a single. Both runners executed a double-steal, and Brittany Keeney's single to right center made it a 2-0 ballgame.
Quinnipiac got one run back an inning later, but UCR matched them with a solo run of their own, and again with two outs. Ariel Shore singled, and advanced two bases on a wild pitch from Bobcat's starter Katie Alfieri.
Kaylie Atkinson then put the Highlanders on top 3-1 with her single as Shore came around to score.
That insurance run would be the game-winner, as Quinnipiac put a scare on UC Riverside as they scored one run in the fifth.
What would have been a routine pop up was dropped by Highlanders pitcher Taylor Alvarez, allowing an unearned Bobcats run to score, as the lead was cut to 3-2.
Alvarez then hit the next batter to load the bases, but she was able to get Alex Alba to pop up to end the threat. Alvarez retired the Quinnipiac batters in order in the sixth and seventh innings, as the Highlanders held on for the 3-2 win.
UC Riverside evens its record to 12-12 on the year, while the Bobcats fall to 8-4.
The Highlanders conclude the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 am.
