Softball Drops Rubber Match At UC Davis, 9-1

Davis, CA—The UC Riverside softball team dropped the rubber match against UC Davis on Monday afternoon, 9-1, as the Aggies took the Big West Conference series winning two of the three games.
UC Davis (12-22, 2-1) chased UCR (18-17, 1-2) starting pitcher Taylor Alvarez by scoring six runs in the first inning—all with two outs—and sending 11 batters to the plate. Alvarez gave up five hits during the inning including walking three batters.
Megan Guzman led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. After a ground out, Rachel Miller doubled to left field as Guzman came around to score.
Two consecutive walks loaded the bases, and a bases-clearing double from Kylie Fan made it a 4-0 game. Another walk and a single loaded the bases for the second time, and Guzman connected on her second hit of the inning as two runners touched home plate.
Jordyn McDonald replaced Alvarez in the circle, and got the next batter to ground out ending the inning.
UC Davis scored a single run in the second inning as the lead grew to 7-0.
In the fourth, the Aggies continued their hot bats with consecutive hits to start off the frame. McDonald gave way to Casey Suda in the circle, but with one out, Amy Nunez tripled to right field sending both runners home as the lead was 9-0.
The Highlanders finally got on board in the fifth inning by scoring a single run. Alaina Thomas was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on Brittany Keeney's RBI single up the middle.
UCR left two runners on base as the game ended with the third out of the frame due to the eight-run mercy rule, with the Aggies winning 9-1.
Justine Vela earned the win in the circle for UC Davis, while Alvarez was saddled with the loss.
The Highlanders return to the friendly confines of Amy S. Harrison Field this Friday-Saturday for a three-game Big West Conference series against Pacific beginning at 1:00 pm in Riverside.
