Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside softball team fell in a doubleheader to Pacific on Friday afternoon, losing a close 3-2 battle in game one, and 9-1 in five innings in the nightcap at Amy S. Harrison Field in Big West Conference action.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Alexis Pickett's RBI single that plated Kayla White after her leadoff double.
UC Riverside had an opportunity in the third to tack on more runs, but stranded two runners on base. Similarily, Pacific left six runners on base through five innings, failing to capitalize on any runs.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth for the Highlanders, Tigers pitcher Tori Shepard hit Yesenia Duenas with a pitch, allowing a single run to score. UCR would end up leaving three runners on base to end the inning, however, as consecutive outs, including a forceout at home plate, ended the frame.
The Tigers opened the sixth inning with consecutive hits, placing runners at the corners. A wild pitch by UCR pitcher Jordyn McDonald made it 2-1, and a RBI single by Megan Allen evened things up at 2-2.
In the seventh, Pacific scored the game-winning run on a sac fly from Taylor Petty. UC Riverside got two runners on base in its respective frame from a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but failed to capitalize as the Tigers had the 3-2 victory.
McDonald was tagged with the loss, while Shepard earned the win for Pacific.
It was the Tigers drawing first blood in the second game as Nicole Matson led off the top of the second with a single to right center off of UC Riverside starter Amy Lwin. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out to short. Amy Moore followed with a single to right to make it 1-0 Pacific.
DIonne Anderson got that run back in the bottom of the frame as she ripped a two-out Nikki Armagost offering over the right center field fence for her second homer of the year.
The Tigers re-took the lead in the top of the fourth as Lwin issued a one out walk to Matson and back-to-back singles to Alexa Rivera and Petty. Moore drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-1 Pacific, and Allen doubled to left center giving the Tigers a threee-run cushion. A Megan Hom double to right made it 6-1 Pacific, which ended Lwin's evening.
Casey Suda took over in the circle for UCR, but the Tigers weren't done scoring. Megan Foglesong drew a walk, and Kelsey Rodriguez doubled to center scoring Hom. Armagost singled to left plating Foglesong, and Matson singled up the middle bringing home Rodriguez for a 9-1 Pacific lead.
Suda recorded the final two outs of the inning on a ground out and a pop up to short, but the damage was done. The Highlanders were unable to score as the game ended after the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Lwin suffered the loss for UCR, while Armagost earned the win.
The Highlanders and Tigers conclude the series with a final game at 12:00 pm on Saturday at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
