Highlanders Fall Short Of Series Sweep, Losing 5-4 At Cal State Fullerton

Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside softball team looked to complete the series sweep of Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon, but the Titans scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to walk away with a 5-4 victory at Anderson Field in Big West Conference action.
It was a game of home runs in the early going, as the Titans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Nicole Johnson's solo homer.
The Highlanders took the lead on an inning later on back-to-back home runs from Dionne Anderson and Kaylie Atkinson.
Jena Rubio then homered for Fullerton in the bottom of the second, tying the score at 2-2. After two scoreless innings, Atkinson hit her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field as UCR went up 3-2.
In the bottom half of the frame, CSF strung three hits together, scoring two runs to go back up 4-3.
In the seventh, the Highlanders got the tying run across, evening the score at 4-4. Jojo Mendoza led off with a single, and was pinch-run for by Halle Luna.
Luna advanced to second on Alaina Thomas' sac bunt, and came home on Kayla White's RBI double to right center.
Cal State Fullerton led off its respective inning with a double, and a fielding error by UCR put runners at first and third. Adriana Martinez then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring the lead runner for the 5-4 victory.
Desiree Ybarra earned the win for CSF, while Jordyn McDonald took the loss for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside continues road play at Long Beach State next Saturday and Sunday for another three-game Big West Conference series.
