San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team took a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning Tuesday afternoon against 16th-ranked San Diego, but the bullpen gave up two in the eighth and one in the ninth as the Toreros walked away with a 6-5 victory
Mark Garcia took over for UCR starter Mitch Patito in the top of the third trailing 2-0, and he held down the fort while the Highlanders rallied, giving up just one run in three and a third innings. By the time he gave way to Gavin Mills in the bottom of the sixth, UC Riverside led 4-3.
Mills got out of the sixth and seventh unscathed, but pinch-hitter Jon Hotta led off the eighth with a double down the right field line, and Louie Lechich singled up the middle to tie the game. Lechich promptly stole second, and advanced to third on a fly out to center by Lucas Hagberg. Ben Doucette (1-1) took over for Mills, and gave up a sac fly to left to give the Toreros the lead.
The Highlanders tied the game up in the top of the ninth though, as Nick Vilter laced a two-out double to left, and Kyle Boudreau drove home pinch runner Cody Stewart with a single to center to tie the game.
Bryan Haar singled to short to open the bottom of the ninth, and after Austin Green sacrificed him to second, Doucette loaded the bases issuing an intentional walk to Connor Joe and plunking Victor Rasor-Thompson. That brought Lechich to the plate, and he worked Doucette for a walk bringing home the winning run.
Mitch Patito got the start for the Highlanders, but he couldn't shake the wildness that has plagued him at various time this season, as he gave up just two hits in two innings but walked four batters as the Toreros took an early 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders got both runs back in the top of the third, however, as Eddie Young, Phil Holinsworth and Vince Gonzalez stroked consecutive singles to load the bases, and Clayton Prestridge brought Young and Holinsworth home with a single to left.
Garcia took over for Patito to start the top of the third, allowing a pair of two-out baserunners before getting Julian Duran to line out to second to end the inning.
UC Riverside took the lead the following inning putting runners on the corners with just one out. Young reached on an error by shortstop Andrew Daniel scoring Drake Zarate from third, and Gonzalez brought Alex Rubanowitz home with a single to left.
San Diego cut the Highlanders lead in half in the bottom of the fourth thanks to Corey LeVier's double to right center which scored Kris Bryant from first.
The Highlanders travel to UC Irvine this weekend for a three-game series with the Anteaters. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6 pm PT.
