Riverside, CA—The Highlanders and Dirtbags split the first two games of their three-game Easter Weekend series with each team picking up a one-run win heading into Saturday's rubber match. But it was Long Beach State roughing up UC Riverside pitching and taking the series with an 8-2 victory. (Box Score)
Trevor Frank (0-5) was in search of his first win of the season for the Highlanders (9-15, 2-4 and he began the game with a strike out of lead off hitter Jeff McNeil, but the next batter, Matt Duffy, tripled to right center, and Ino Patron brought him home with a sac fly to left.
LBSU (12-17, 4-2) struck again in the top of the third inning. After striking out in his first at-bat, McNeil redeemed himself with a double to right field. After a Duffy walk, Patron reached on an error by UCR second basemen Jake Gallaway, loading the bases with one out. Juan Avila flied out to center field driving McNeil home with another sac fly to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the fifth, Long Beach State's Kellen Hoime singled through the left side to start the frame, advancing to second on a sac bunt by McNeil. Patron then singled to center field, driving Hoime home for the Dirtbags' third run of the day.
After Patron advanced to second on a wild pitch, Juan Avila singled to left field, advancing to second on the throws as Patron scored to increase the lead to 4-0 for the Dirtbags. That prompted a visit to the mound from Highlanders Pitching Coach Bobby Applegate, but Frank gave up a single up the middle to Brennan Metzger sending Avila home for the third run of the inning.
Long Beach State continued to hack away at UC Riverside pitching in the seventh inning, this time off of Highlanders relief pitcher Gavin Mills. Patron led off the inning with a triple to right field. Avila then drove him home with a sac fly to right to make it 6-0 Dirtbags.
The Highlanders finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Cody Hough walk, an AJ Beckley single to left, a wild pitch and a Jake Gallaway ground out. Alex Rubanowitz then flied out to center scoring Beckley to cut the LBSU lead to four, but that was all the offense UCR could muster.
The Dirtbags scored two more runs in the top of the ninth thanks to an RBI single by Johnny Bekakis and an Antonio Gonzales wild pitch.
Shawn Stuart earned the win for the Dirtbags, giving up seven hits and two runs in seven innings. UCR's Frank was charged with the loss, giving up eight hits and and four runs in five innings.
The Highlanders continue their 12-game home stand on Tuesday as they host Pepperdine at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT
