Men's Tennis Opens Big West Competition With 5-2 Loss To UC Irvine

Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team began a string of five straight Big West conference matches Saturday afternoon dropping a 5-2 decision at UC Irvine.
Last season, the Anteaters were a perfect 5-0 in conference play including a 7-0 win over UCR. UC Irvine won each of the singles matches against the Highlanders in 2011 in straight sets.
The 2012 meeting between these clubs was much more competitive as UC Riverside put a scare into the Anteaters with Luis Gastao defeating Jon Kazarian 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 at number four singles, and Kelly Dickson topping Eric Gast at number six singles 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (1).
Felix Macherez nearly upset the 70th ranked player in the nation, Fabian Matthews, falling 6-4, 6-4 at number one singles, and Austin Andres battled Jacob Jung through three tight sets at number three singles before falling 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3).
UC Riverside's number three doubles team of Simon Peters and Jimmy Roberts nearly upended Matthews and Shuhei Shibahara as well, falling 8-7.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday, August 14 trip to UC Davis.
