8/31/2012 6:26:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Eastern Washington 0
Spokane, WA—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team got back to its winning ways Friday afternoon with a 25-19, 25-16, and 25-22 victory over Eastern Washington in the first game of the Gonzaga Invitational. The Highlanders move to 3-1 on the young season, tying their Division I program record for best start.
Shelby LeDuff and Ashley Cox led the Highlanders with 11 kills apiece as UCR hit .228 and limited the Eagles (0-5) to a .153 hitting percentage.
In the first set, UC Riverside turned a 5-4 lead into a 10-5 advantage as LeDuff served for two aces during the 5-0 run. EWU got as close as three, 13-10, a few points later, but the Highlanders scored five of the next six points to go up 18-11.
Eastern Washington made another run, closing again to three, 20-17, but UCR had an answer and scored two consecutive to go back up by five, 22-17. The Highlanders then closed out the set using an Amanda Vialpando kill for the 25-19 win.
Leading 14-12 in the second set, UC Riverside turned on the jets outscoring the Eagles 11-4 over the remainder to go up 2-0 in the match with a 25-16 win.
In the third set, EWU came out of the gates strong outscoring the Highlanders 7-2. UCR persevered, however, eventually tying the set at 11 and taking a 13-11 advantage. From that point on, UC Riverside held on to the lead as it fluctuated between one and three points.
Leading 23-19 late in the set, the Highlanders couldn't quite put the Eagles away just yet, allowing three consecutive points and calling timeout at 23-22. The timeout served them well, however, as kills by Cox and LeDuff sealed the deal for the Highlanders as they won the set and match 25-22.
The Highlanders continue the Gonzaga Invitational facing the host Bulldogs at 9 am PT on Saturday, and conclude the tournament against South Dakota State at 4 pm that day.
