
Volleyball Falls In Four Sets To South Dakota State

Spokane, WA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team concluded play at the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to South Dakota State at the Martin Centre.
SDSU (4-2) won the first set 25-19 before the Highlanders (3-3) rallied to win set two 25-21. The Jackrabbits then won the third set 25-18 to take a 2-1 lead in the match, and closed out play with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Three UCR players recorded double-digit kills led by a game-high 14 from Amanda Vialpando. Shelby LeDuff added 13 kills and 15 digs for her first double-double of the season, while Ashley Cox had 12 kills.
After falling behind 1-0 in the match with a first-set loss, the Highlanders evened things up winning set two 25-21. UCR quickly took a 6-1 lead capitalizing on three Jackrabbit errors and using kills from Cox and LeDuff, and a service ace from Vialpando.
SDSU rallied back to close the gap to one, 12-11, and got within one on three more occasions, the last at 18-17. The Highlanders held on to their lead, however, scoring two straight points en route to a 25-21 win.
In set three, UC Riverside fell behind 17-12 midway through, but put together a 3-0 run to close to just two, 17-15. The rally wasn't enough, though, as South Dakota State outscored the HIghlanders 8-3 to take a 2-1 advantage in the match with its 25-18 victory.
The Jackrabbits seemed to have control early on in set four, leading 14-10, but UC Riverside scored seven of the next 10 points to tie things at 17.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders, South Dakota State closed out the set on an 8-2 run to secure the 25-19 victory.
UC Riverside returns to the Golden State for three matches at the Cal Invitational on September 7-8 in Berkeley, CA.
